A tooth can hurt badly due to a minor issue, and it can have a serious problem without any obvious symptoms.

That is precisely why the type of pain matters more than its intensity. How it occurs, how long it lasts, what triggers it, and how it responds to stimuli can provide important clues about what is happening.

Common types of toothache and what they may indicate

Short-term sensitivity to cold or heat

You feel a slight twinge for a split second when you drink something cold or hot, and then it goes away. Most of the time, it’s caused by slight gum recession, enamel wear, or an exposed root. It’s not necessarily serious, but it’s worth mentioning at your next checkup.

Prolonged pain when exposed to heat

If the pain lasts for several minutes or worsens when exposed to something hot, it may indicate inflammation of the tooth’s nerve. This type of pain suggests a more serious underlying issue that requires evaluation.

Pain when chewing

If a tooth hurts when you bite or chew, it could be due to a crack, a filling that no longer fits properly, or a problem with the root. It’s important not to ignore this pain, even if it’s bearable.

Spontaneous pain, without a triggering factor

If a tooth starts to hurt on its own, without you drinking or eating anything in particular, this may indicate an active infection. It may be accompanied by swelling, tenderness, or a throbbing sensation.

Diffuse pain that is difficult to pinpoint

Sometimes the patient feels pain “somewhere,” but cannot pinpoint the exact tooth. Referred pain may originate from a tooth, the maxillary sinuses, or a muscle problem related to the temporomandibular joint. An accurate diagnosis requires an examination.

When should you go to the dentist?

Any toothache that lasts longer than 1–2 days or recurs periodically should be evaluated. There are situations that require a more urgent visit:

The pain is severe and does not respond to standard painkillers

A swelling has appeared on my gum or cheek

Do you have a fever along with toothache?

An area in my mouth is bleeding heavily

A tooth has broken or become dislocated as a result of trauma

Do you have a persistent unpleasant taste coming from a specific area?

In these cases, delaying treatment can complicate matters. The earlier the evaluation is conducted, the simpler the treatment options are.

What You Shouldn't Do at Home

A few things that can make the situation worse or mask the symptoms:

Applying aspirin directly to the gums (may cause chemical burns to the mucous membrane)

Apply alcohol or concentrated hydrogen peroxide to the tooth

Ignoring the pain for weeks on end, hoping it will go away on its own

Taking antibiotics without a doctor's recommendation

An over-the-counter pain reliever can be taken to temporarily manage pain, but it does not replace a medical evaluation.

What happens when you arrive at the office

The doctor will ask you about the type of pain, when it started, and what makes it worse or better. Then they will examine the area, check for signs of inflammation or infection, and, if necessary, may recommend an X-ray to see what’s going on beneath the surface.

Depending on the diagnosis, it may be a cavity that needs to be treated, a root canal that is necessary, an extraction that is recommended, or simply a matter of monitoring. Every situation is different.

At Neodent Tecuci, patients with dental pain are scheduled as soon as possible. The evaluation includes a clinical examination and, if necessary, on-site imaging tests, eliminating the need for a second visit.

This article is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical consultation.
